As it happened: The dream is dead, Ind 171 all out
By 24X7Cineworld - Sunday, 15 January 2012
Two and a half days… maybe a little less than that but that’s all it took for Australia to complete the rout. Kohli was the last man dismissed, perhaps aptly… outside the off-stump. It has ended in a whimper. The dream is dead. India have lost the match by an innings and 37 runs. The Aussies are now up 3-0 and the series is won. India will move to Adelaide looking to avoid another ‘whitewash.’
Dhoni: A hard one to stomach. Warner played really well. He took the game away from us. The only difference — the failure in the batting line-up really hurt us. For me, class is always there. The seniors are still there. Two back-to-back abroad series where they have not performed. Virat and Umesh are a big positive. Lot of pressure on Virat, with Rohit pushing him. Yadav is a very good bowler and takes wickets. Not just pitches and conditions, we haven’t adapted well. Only motivation we have left is to beat Australia in Adelaide.
Warner (man-of-the-match): I see myself as a batsman and try to score runs. At the end of the day, most of the fielders are behind the stumps. So if you get bat on ball, you will get value for runs. To bring up 200 runs with Ed Cowan was special.
Clarke: Our bowlers have been doing a great job for a long time. The work we have put in as a batting group shows, we have found a way to make 300 in a majority of our innings. In Australia, these days, there is always something for the bowlers. So the batting group needs to click and we are getting there. As a team we are slowly taking steps and heading in the right direction. I want to see us continue to have success and become World number one in all three formats.
1049 IST: India 171-9 after 62.5 overs
I Sharma c Cowan b Hilfenhaus 0 (3b)
Now Ishant joins the procession. Virat must be pretty frustrated. He is playing the best innings of his life and the rest are just throwing it away. Even our tail doesn’t wag. Australia is just one wicket away from a resounding series win.
1045 IST: India 171-8 after 62.2 overs
Z Khan c Clarke b Hilfenhaus 0 (1b)
Brute of a bouncer that Zaheer knew nothing about. Clarke at slips took a splendid catch.
1043 IST: India 171-7 after 62.1 overs
Vinay Kumar c Clarke b Hilfenhaus 6 (20b 1×4)
Seven balls after the break, India have Vinay back in the pavilion. He hung his bat outside the off-stump, got the edge and was walking back quickly. Bad cricket. Virat was playing well.
0955 IST: India 165-6 after 60 overs
V Kohli 69 (128), Vinay Kumar 6 (13)
That’s lunch. Kohli walks away proud — no words exchanged, no aggro, no nothing. Just plain simple cricket, effective too. That’s what Kohli needs to do more of. This could be the innings that defines the template he needs to follow to be successful at the Test level. India still trail by 43 runs.
0935 IST: India 148-6 after 55.4 overs
M Dhoni c Ponting b Siddle 2 (16b)
Dhoni played away from the body, subtle away movement from Siddle did the rest. He was caught by Ponting in the cordon. India still trail by 60. And this is it. Dhoni looks like a broken man and it’s sad to see him this way. He’s decided that he just isn’t good enough for Australia.
0915 IST: India 135-5 after 50.5 overs
R Dravid b Harris 47 (114b 8×4)
Rahul Dravid clean bowled by the persistent Ryan Harris. India still trail by 73. This is pretty crazy stuff. It almost seems like the best way to get Dravid out these days is to bowl straight. He certainly seems to have developed a blond spot of sorts.
Off twitter, @rgcricket: Dravid bowled for 54th time – most such dismissals by any batsman in Test cricket, goes past Border (53)
0855 IST: India 129-4 after 48 overs
R Dravid 41 (101), V Kohli 52 (97)
It’s drinks and Kohli has moved on his 50 off 92 balls. His best innings of the tour and probably one of India’s finest batting sessions so far. They seem to be negotiating everything with a fair degree of ease — leaving the ball well and defending without looking flustered. This is good stuff from India — now they need to make it count. There’s still a lot of time left in the match. Time for the Sunday miracle?
0830 IST: India 114-4 after 42 overs
R Dravid 41 (89), V Kohli 37 (73)
Fair bit of resistance being shown by the two batsmen. It would have been easy to roll over and let the Aussies cruise to victory but this innings might very well prove to be the making of Kohli. For all the fingering that he has done this week, this innings shows that when he keeps his mouth shut and concentrates on cricket, he isn’t a bad player at all.
Day 2
India 88-4 after 32 overs
R Dravid 32 (63), V Kohli 21 (39)
Stumps. India 88-4. Trail by 120 runs. 308 runs, 14 wickets today. Quite a day but once again, India find themselves on the wrong end of things. The bowlers gave a much-improved performance but it is the much-vaunted batting line-up that has failed India again. This should end early tomorrow morning. It’s Sunday.
